Popular Beach For Cruise Ship Passengers

Tobacco Bay Beach is a popular beach for cruise ship passengers and is the most popular beach in St. George’s Parish. One can walk to the beach in about ten minutes from the town of St. George. Tobacco Bay Beach Bermuda got its name when the survivors of the Sea Venture, Sir George Somers’ ship, discovered tobacco growing there. The sand at Tobacco Bay Beach is pale yellow instead of the pink sand seen elsewhere in Bermuda.

Tobacco Bay Beach has calm, shallow water with good visibility. Fifteen to 25 feet high limestone rock formations shelter the bay and separate it from the open ocean. It is an excellent location for snorkeling as many reef structures are located under the surface of the water. A variety of colorful fish can be seen such as angelfish, blue parrotfish, grouper, hogfish, and sergeant majors among others.

However, it should be noted that the untreated sewage of the town of St. George is piped into the ocean just a mile from the shore.

Facilities of Tobacco Bay Beach Bermuda

Tobacco Bay Beach is unusual in that it has a liquor license in addition to concessions. The beach has public restrooms, changing rooms, and showers. The Buzz Café offers food and alcoholic beverages. As of June of 2014, Tobacco Bay Beach is managed by a private company called Beach Boys which has introduced new activities such as flyboarding, jet ski tours, paddleboarding, and snorkeling.

Flyboarding is where a participant stands on a platform and water jets push him or her high above the water’s surface. There is a concession stand that rents snorkeling gear, umbrellas, chairs, noodles, and floats. Snorkeling gear can also be purchased instead of renting.

Tobacco Bay Beach Bermuda has an interesting history in that it was connected with Bermuda’s “Gunpowder Plot.” On August 14, 1775, Bermudans supportive of the American Continental Congress’s cause stole gunpowder from the British magazine in St. George. They then took it across the island to Tobacco Bay Beach and shipped it to America.

Nearby Hotels & Restaurants

There are two hotels in the town of St. George, Aunt Nea’s Inn at Hillcrest and the St. George’s Club. Aunt Nea’s Inn has just 15 rooms and is located near the beach. Guestrooms feature complimentary wireless internet access and refrigerators. St. George’s Club is quite a bit larger with 71 rooms and is located on a private beach. The hotel has a restaurant and an outdoor pool. Guestrooms feature a kitchen, complimentary wireless internet access, and sofa bed.

Hotels outside of St. George but still close to Tobacco Bay Beach include Rosewood Tucker’s Point and the Pink Beach Club, at 3.6 and 3.9 miles away respectively. Rosewood Tucker’s Point is a luxury resort rated 4.5 stars by U.S. News & World Report. Some of the resort’s suites feature fireplaces, wet bars, and dining areas. The resort has a spa, pool, and a golf course. The Pink Beach Club is an upscale resort located in Tucker’s Town. It is closed from November through April. The resort offers in-room spa treatments, two tennis courts, a pool, and a restaurant.
