Short History Alexandra’s Battery Beach
Alexandra’s Battery Beach is located on the eastern edge of Bermuda in St. George’s Island, just under a mile to the east of St. George. The beach is just below Alexandra’s Battery, an 1860s fort named after Denmark’s Princess Alexandra who was married to Edward VII who later became the king of Great Britain. The fort is open to the public and admission is free.
Well Known for Sea Glass and Calm, Clean Water
Alexandra’s Battery Beach is well-known for the wide variety of sea glass that can be collected there in colors such as green, brown, white, amber, blue, and red. Pottery pieces and shells can also be found. The glass shards are not as sharp as those from man-made glass, but protective footwear is still a good idea to wear. There is a small cave where even more sea glass can be found, although it is a bit hard to reach. One has to cross over and navigate through some rocks to reach it.
The water at Alexandra’s Battery Beach is calm, clear, and shallow which makes it great for snorkeling. In addition, when snorkeling one may find even more sea glass than is on the beach itself. There are no public restrooms available at the beach and no lifeguards are posted. The beach can be busy at times as it is located in a frequently visited area.
